I was going to write about Eric Holder being cited for contempt by the house but this will have to wait until Monday. There is something far dumber and more infuriating to write about.
I am a frequent visitor of news sites and while I certainly noticed the headlines regarding a school bus employee being bullied, I decided to not read or even acknowledge the story because it looked like distraction newsmaking at its finest. I do this quite often and what tends to happen is after a day or two the story fades from the news media and I can go on reading about more important things like Iran or Kayne West.
Its been three days. THREE DAYS! And the story is not just still around but its everywhere. I decided that I would finally give this article the time of day. So I read this Gawker synopsis:
a video apparently recorded by a student aboard a school bus she is responsible for monitoring clearly shows the torment she is being forced to endure at the hands of foul-mouthed schoolkids.
Towleroad stomached the ten-minute-long video and jotted down some of the nastier insults:
"Dumb-ass, fat-ass." "Maybe she is an elephant." "She's gonna pick out which kid she's gonna rape next." "Karen wants herpes." "F**king hearing aid." "I'll egg your house." "What's your address so I can p*ss all over your door." "I'll f**king take a cr*p in your mouth." "You touched her arm flap. It's all stinky and smelly." "She probably eats deodorant because she can't afford real food." "What size bra are you? Triple sag?"
So a bunch of middle schoolers recorded themselves verbally abusing bus monitor Karen Klein. In response, and you can see this in the video, she sits there and doesn't do anything about it. Let me ask those who were bullied in Middle School like myself: What happened when you sat there and did nothing while a awkward/smelly/squeaky voiced middle school kid picked on you. Did they stop and say "Oh I see this is not affecting you in a negative fashion, therefore I will stop and go masturbate somewhere." No, of course not. They would continue to torment you until they got a reaction because they are base level Neanderthals that can perform a task until their actions are rewarded.
Some of you reading this though would probably say that I should feel bad for her. It's true, she is being verbally abused and those kids are being horrible to her. I don't deny this and it would suck to be in her shoes. However, I don't feel bad for her because she took a job where this kind of thing is expected. For people who had to take the school bus, can you ever remember a time when the bus driver wasn't made fun of on a daily basis? I'd love to hear your comments on this because in multiple parts of the country I have been on school buses and I can say the driver is always ridiculed and demeaned. Its not fair but it comes with the territory.
Do you feel bad for the Denny's waitress who works the graveyard shift and deals with drunks and meth heads at 3 in the morning? Or a correctional officer where it isn't a surprise when an inmate throws feces at you? Both of these jobs absolutely suck but I don't feel bad for the people doing them because they chose to do a job that has a lot of baggage that comes with it. In return, they tend to get paid a premium over other positions for dealing with all the crap they have to put up with. Karen could have been a greeter at Wal-Mart but she probably gets paid better to deal with kids because the job is much worse. It was her choice.
The fact that people are upset with this is annoying but understandable. What isn't understandable is this:
Cooper then brought up the "vacation fund" set up for Klein by 25-year-old Toronto-based nutritionist Max Sidorov, which currently stands at nearly half a million dollars in donated funds.
Though Sidorov said he will ensure the money will make its way directly to Klein, the 68-year-old remains skeptical. "I can't believe it," she said. "That much? I don't know, I just don't feel like it'll come to me anyway, so I don't think too much about it. It's a nice gesture, but I just don't know if it's for real or not."
If the fund doesn't pan out, Klein still has at least one free vacation to fall back on: Southwest Airlines has offered to send her and nine guests to Disneyland, all expenses paid.
After pasting that in I literally needed a minute to compose myself. If you donated even a penny to this vacation fund, you are one of the most terrible, clueless individuals to ever be put on this earth. I could give many examples of groups that not only need the money more then this woman but deserve it more too. What about giving it to undereducated kids or African health care initiatives? Nope, lets give it to this fat sad sack who already gets Social Security and Medicare.
This bus monitor, who wasn't even good at her job, may get a half million dollars because she let a bunch of sub-human adolescent boys get to her. At the same time some poor teacher, who has spent 30 years teaching these dumb kids and actually having to interact with them is getting their pension cut.
